Take The Bernina Express As A Day Trip From Milan, Italy

I don’t think they sell out based on the period you’re traveling in! In general, I don’t normally see regional trains running out of tickets. If there are no promotions you can take advantage of, consider taking the regular regional train and skipping panoramic seats.

One of the most confusing parts of calculating the cost of your experience is that the return ticket is a base fare of €65, while the seat reservation rate on the scenic transport costs an additional €24 each way. But you have to reserve a seat to sit in the quaint carriage, they don’t sell open tickets. The railway line is unique and fits ideally with the alpine landscapes around the Albula and Bernina Passes. The train conquers the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and slopes up to 70 per thousand with ease. At the highest point of the RhB, at 2,253 meters above sea level, lies the Ospizio Bernina. Here visitors can enjoy the cultural and natural surroundings and enjoy the Alps in their most impressive way.

As mentioned above, you will travel from Switzerland to Italy. In the summer months, the Bernina Express runs a bus from Tirano to Lugano to coincide with the arrival of the train. The bus runs along the shores of Lake Como and takes about three hours.

Official Bernina Express tickets can be purchased here, but there are also a plethora of tours you might want to book instead, especially if you’re staying in Italy and enjoying tours. While it may seem relaxing, keep in mind that the trip from Switzerland to Italy and vice versa is still a full day of travel. This means an early start and a late finish, especially if you factor in a little extra time to explore Chur after the train ride. Thanks to its location in eastern Switzerland, Chur takes a little longer to get there than many of the other towns and villages that normally make up Switzerland’s tourist route.

From Milan Central Station, take the Italian regional train to Tirano. Reservations are not necessary, so just buy the ticket on arrival at the station and get on the train. This underrated stage of the journey crosses the Italian countryside, passing picturesque Lake Como along the way.

The reservation is separate from that of the train and costs 14 Swiss francs. You should also know that when buying your Bernina Express tickets, you actually have to pay two different fares. While the first part of the ticket is the single fare that runs from A to B, the next part costs 14CHF and is mandatory for a seat reservation on the iconic Swiss train. You could make the tour in one day, it is possible given the schedules.

Due to budget constraints and because we had already done the Pilatus at Lucerne, San Salvatore in Lugano, and still wanted to climb the Jungfraujoch, we decided to skip the trip to the Muottas Muragl. When traveling by train, it is common sense to sit in the direction in which the train travels. Some people get nauseous when they can’t or feel like they’re getting lost because Treno rosso del Bernina you’ll see the landscape if you’ve already passed it. Bernina Express trains and carriages are noticeably painted bright red. The large panoramic vaulted glass windows offer you a beautiful view of the landscape. If you have any questions about this or any other train service, do not hesitate to post them on our friendly forum, where one of us will be happy to help you.
